Stolen notepad from council results in £1,500 data breach win for client
Our client was under the age of 20, and had been evicted from a rental property which resulted in her becoming homeless for 2 months prior to being provided accommodation by her local Council. In the lead up to being supported with new accommodation, our client spoke to numerous members of staff on the telephone to arrange the new property.
It was 1 month later, when our client was emailed by the council, advising that a GDPR breach had occurred, and that her details had been compromised. The email outlined that an officer at the local council, had a notepad stolen from their car; which had led to the clients and other persons personal details to be exposed.
After proceeding with a letter of claim to the defendant we were able to settle the claim and reward our client with £1,500. Although there was no definitive proof the clients details where within this notebook; the impact of a data breach can cause distress and worry, which is a factor we consider within settlements, as mental strains can affect quality of life due to such losses.
