Manchester United Football Club are the victims of a cyber security incident which has left parts of their online systems inaccessible. They have confirmed that as far as they are aware, no customer data has been compromised, just staffs.

The club announced the breach last week which is still ongoing now, suggesting that it has been done by highly skilled hackers. We are not sure at this stage if a ransom fee has been asked for or who is responsible for the attack as the club have not disclosed.

The attack has been reported to the Information Commissioners Office, which is a legal requirement.

Staff at the club have lost access to their emails and the National Cyber Security Centre are currently involved.

A spokesperson said: “The NCSC is aware of an incident affecting Manchester United Football Club and we are working with the organisation and partners to understand impact.”

A club statement, which has released earlier this week read: “Manchester United can confirm that the club has experienced a cyber-attack on our systems.

“The club has taken swift action to contain the attack and is currently working with expert advisers to investigate the incident and minimise the ongoing IT disruption.

“Although this is a sophisticated operation by organised cyber criminals, the club has extensive protocols and procedures in place for such an event and had rehearsed for this eventuality.

“Our cyber defences identified the attack and shut down affected systems to contain the damage and protect data.

“Club media channels, including our website and app, are unaffected and we are not currently aware of any breach of personal data associated with our fans and customers.”
