ITV Viewers Shocked Over Croydon Council Homes Riddled With Disrepair

Croydon Council have advised that an investigation into the Council properties has begun, in light of the recent ITV News showing on Monday 22nd March 2021.

The disrepair located in the South Norwood properties situated in under the Croydon Council umbrella included:

  • Persistent leaks
  • Flooding within properties
  • Mould and Damp
  • Lavatories not in use
  • Pleas from tenants has been ignored for a number of years, as early as 2019. The concerning footage shown led to raise serious questions on how people could be allowed to live in such conditions in the 21st Century.
    1. Why were the Council failing their tenants pleas?
How many more tenants are suffering in silence?
Why are the disrepair concerns only being reviewed now that the press have become involved?

ITV spoke to residents of Regina Road who all lived in the block of flats located here. One tenant stated “she has reported about 10 leaks in the five years she has lived there. Recently she says she was left without a toilet for four nights. Her seven-year-old son has bowel problems and the pair were isolating before a planned operation at the time.”

Another tenant stated that his kitchen was so mould ridden due to a persistent leak, that the family had to relocate into another room due to the severity of the disrepair making it inhabitable.  Here at Angelus Law we are aware that mould and damp can cause health implications and must be rectified as soon as possible to prevent more health and structural damage from occurring. This was confirmed by a third tenant who expressed that her daughter’s asthma was worsened by the mould and damp present in the property, which has spread considerably.

Councillor Cummings said “words can’t describe” how she felt when she learnt of the appalling conditions on Friday. She added: “Every one of us has to take responsibility, we need an investigation as to what happened. “I want to find out whether it is a problem across the borough. We want to find out how it got to that stage.”

As the council faces a serious financial crisis, having to declare bankruptcy in November, there will be questions whether the situation in South Norwood was exacerbated by a freeze on non-essential spending.

My Housing Association have ignored the problems in my property for years. When Angelus Law got involved they ended up getting all the problems fixed for free and I received thousands in compensation.

When I moved into my house 4 years ago, it turns out my landlord didn’t protect my deposit until 2 months after I had moved in. Angelus Law recovered 3 times the amount of the deposit as compensation for me.

I thought I had lost every chance of a happy retirement when my SIPP collapsed. My Financial Advisor had told me my money would be safe. Angelus recovered my full investment plus interest.
