Historical Abuse Claims

We understand that being a victim of childhood abuse can have a lifelong impact on a person’s health, education, employment, relationships and more.

What is historical abuse?

‘Historical Abuse’ is a term used to describe abuse, either physical or sexual, that occurred to a person during childhood or before the age of 18. The sufferer of that abuse will have now reached adulthood. Although some adults may always have been aware of the fact that they suffered abuse as a child, others may have only recently gained an understanding. The abuse may have been committed by a family member, a religious leader/advisor, a family friend, a foster parent, a medical professional, a police officer, a teacher, or another person in a trusted position of authority. Sometimes those who were abused in childhood blame themselves or are made to feel it’s their fault, but this is never the case. There is no excuse for abuse. Regardless of whether a person was always aware or recently gained understanding, they may be able to claim compensation, obtain rehabilitative treatment and/or obtain acknowledgment of failings from those responsible.
